Education and Qualifications: Born in Salinas and raised in this valley, I am familiar with the area and the people. I have been with El Teatro Campesino of San Juan Bautista for many years as an actress. My experience as an educator (both Home School and Public) has enabled me to become well versed in all aspects of Education.

This summer I supervised the Summer Enrichment Program at San Juan School. The theme was "Natural and Cultural History of Monterey Bay Region." It included Science, Art, Theater Arts, gardening and sports. This program engaged students in learning and challenged them to do their best. Our schools can do this too.

I have a grandson who attends San Juan school as well as two others who will attend in the future. I would like to be assured that they will get the best education possible. This is one of the reasons for my candidacy.

Since I am bilingual I think I can be a bridge to help unite the English and Spanish speaking members of our community in the task of building great schools.

We must always remember that our children are the messengers that we are sending to a time we will not see.

Educación y Calificaciones: Yo nací en Salinas y me crié en este valle, por lo que estoy familiarizada con este sector y con su gente. Por muchos años, he trabajado con El Teatro Campesino de San Juan Bautista como actriz. Mi experiencia como educadora (en las Escuelas Home y Public) me ha permitido estar muy al tanto de todos los aspectos de la educación.

Este verano supervisé el Programa de Enriquecimiento de Verano en la Escuela San Juan. El título fue "Historia Natural y Cultural de la Región de la Bahía de Monterey". Abarcó las Ciencias, las Artes, las Artes Dramáticas, la jardinería y los deportes. Este programa introdujo a los alumnos en la enseñanza y los retó a hacer lo mejor posible. Nuestras escuelas pueden hacer lo mismo.

Tengo un nieto que asiste a la Escuela San Juan y dos más que asistirán en el futuro. Me gustaría estar segura de que puedan recibir la mejor preparación académica posible. Esta es una de las razones principales de mi candidatura.

Debido a que soy bilingüe creo que puedo tender un puente para unir a las personas de habla inglesa y de habla hispana de nuestra comunidad en la tarea de establecer buenas escuelas.

Education and Qualifications: Our school district can be one of the best in California. This goal may seem far-fetched, but it is attainable.

Many high school students are requesting permission to transfer out of Anzar High School. We must find out why students are leaving and actively listen to our community’s concerns and suggestions.

My life prepared me to tackle difficult tasks. I was a record-holding, long distance runner in high school. For 16 years I taught at Soledad prison. This gave me insight into motivating students with a history of failure. I’m active in my union and currently representing approximately 3000 educators in state agencies.

I’ve worked to create prison education programs that reduce the high rate of return to prison. I spearheaded Senate Bill 1845 to create a correctional school district and mobilized many organizations to help – including the Catholic Conference, NAACP, LA Times, San Francisco Chronicle, etc.

This summer I volunteered in the Summer Enrichment Program, organized by my wife, Mary. Operating on a shoe-string budget, it proved that with local resources we can accomplish great things.

Educación y Calificaciones: Nuestro distrito escolar podría ser uno de los mejores en California. Esta puede parecer una meta muy exagerada, pero es sostenible.

Muchos alumnos de las escuelas superiores han solicitado salir de la Escuela Superior de Anzar. Tenemos que averiguar por qué los alumnos se van y escuchar activamente las preocupaciones y las sugerencias de nuestra comunidad.

Mi vida me ha preparado para acometer tareas difíciles. Establecí un récord en la escuela superior como corredor de fondo. Por 16 años enseñé en la prisión de Soledad. Esto me ha dado la perspicacia para motivar a los alumnos que tengan un historial de fracasos. Participo en mi sindicato y actualmente represento a aproximadamente 3000 educadores en las oficinas estatales.

Trabajé para iniciar programas de instrucción en las prisiones a fin de reducir la alta incidencia de reos que vuelven a la prisión. Estuve a la cabeza del Proyecto de Ley 1845 del Senado para formar un distrito escolar correccional y movilicé a muchas organizaciones que prestaron su ayuda, incluyendo la Conferencia Católica, la NAACP, el Los Angeles Times, el San Francisco Chronicle, etc.

Este verano, trabajé como voluntario en el Programa de Enriquecimiento de Verano, organizado por mi esposa Mary. Ha podido funcionar con un presupuesto muy escaso y demostró así que con los recursos locales podemos lograr grandes cosas.
