Statement of JIM MOORE, Candidate for
Director
Central Fire Protection District

Occupation: Self-employed Age: 54

Education and Qualifications: I can bring to the Board of Directors for the Central County Fire District, an experienced, common sense approach for the taxpayer in the Central County Fire District, but also a deep appreciation for our firefighters who protect and serve our community. I currently live in the Central County Fire District and have lived here for the past 54 years. From 1965 to 1975, I served as one of the first, paid firefighters in the Central County Fire District, responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the fire vehicles, safety equipment and fire apparatus. I have owned and operated Moore and Sons Outboard Motors, Inc. on East Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz for the last 37 years.

My credentials include:
First, paid firefighter in Central County Fire District;
Fire Instructor at Cabrillo College, 1973;
Soquel High Booster Club, fund raising member, 1985-1990;
Married and parent of 3;
Businessperson;
Currently, Administrative / Finance Committee member Resurrection Church

If elected to this office, I will do my best to uphold the integrity of our firefighters. Protect and serve the needs of the residents and business owners and properly allocate our tax dollars in the Central County Fire District for the benefit of all.

Statement of JEFF DORRELL, Candidate for
Director
Central Fire Protection District

Occupation: Industrially / Medically Retired Firefighter Age: 38

Education and Qualifications: I have been in the Santa Cruz fire service since 1979. I began as a volunteer with the Soquel Fire District. I was a career firefighter until I damaged my lungs while fighting a fire in Capitola in 1998. I was president of the firefighter’s union for five years and Deputy Director for the California State Firefighters Association for fifteen years. I am a homeowner in the district. I attended Harbor High and Cabrillo College.

When elected I will support:
  • Restoring the moral, integrity, and public trust of our fire district
  • Hiring a competent fire chief to maintain local control
  • Stopping the take over / merger of Central Fire by the Aptos /La Selva Fire District

The threat of closing the downtown Soquel Fire Station and the difference in the two-fire district’s yearly budgets make a merger a bad deal for the residents of Live Oak, Capitola and Soquel. Help stop the merger train that’s on the fast track. Vote for candidates that support maintaining local control of your fire district, or the sirens you hear will be Central Fire engines rushing bags of your taxpayer gold to the Aptos / La Selva Fire District.

Statement of CHARLES HOWARD, Candidate for
Director
Central Fire Protection District

Occupation: Retired Fire Captain Age: 66

Education and Qualifications: I have resided in the Santa Cruz mid county area since 1946. I have 29 years of experience as a fire fighter, and I am completing a four-year term as your Director for the Central Fire Protection District. During my tenure I have served as the chair of the personnel committee, a member of the finance committee, the appeals board, and currently the Central/Aptos over-sight committee. I was also involved in the establishment of the Central Fire District paramedic service, the construction of the new administration facility, and the new Thurber Lane Fire Station. I actively participated in the purchase of the new heavy rescue truck, and the appropriation of funds for a new ladder truck.

I strongly support the efforts being made by the Central and Aptos/La Selva Fire Districts exploring the possibility of consolidation. If re-elected, I will continue to serve all the residents in the District by always looking for ways to improve services to the community. I am deeply dedicated to protecting resident's homes and the natural environment. My priorities as an incumbent Fire Director are: the continual modernization of equipment in our fire stations, the continued training of personnel, and educating the public in regards to fire safety.
